6. A small clash with mother

CHAPTER 6
A small clash with mother

At night Shermi was sitting in the hall watching TV. Hindi songs were going on. Madhavi brought a small box from the room. She sat next to Shermi on the sofa. “Eh, Shermi. See, what your uncle Jaidev has sent for you.”

Shermi saw her mother opening the box.

Madhavi said, “See, Jaidev uncle has sent 20 lakhs worth of gold ornaments for your marriage. See glass bangles, diamond necklace, chain………”

Shermi looked at the ornaments. Generally ladies are attracted to gold. Shermi also took the ornaments in her hands. But suddenly, Avinash came into her mind. She lost interest and continued to watch TV.

Madhavi was surprised. “Aren’t you interested?”

Shermi looked at her mother seriously. “Mommy, I don’t want to get married so soon.”

Madhavi was shocked. “How can you say so? Such a good alliance. Deepak is such a good boy.”

Shermi said seriously, “Really, mommy. I have only seen his photo. I have not even seen the boy. You people are only selecting and deciding everything by yourself.”

Madhavi was surprised. She stared at Shermi. “What did you say? You know that your uncle knows everything. Not only that, he knows the boy very well. His parents are dead. You will be like a queen there. Such a good match. He too agreed to marry you without seeing you.”

Shermi got angry. “I don’t want to get married now.”

Madhavi was shocked and angry. “What are you saying? Till yesterday, you were ok. What had happened to you today? Say the same thing in front of your uncle, let’s see. He will skin you alive.”

Shermi looked somewhere seriously. She was also afraid of her uncle Jaidev. But now Avinash had entered her life.

Madhavi said, “Just imagine what your uncle will say if he comes to know. He has done so much for us. We are in such a good position all because of him. He has even brought 20 lakhs worth of gold for your marriage.”

Shermi’s heartbeat increased. She got up and went to her room. She rolled on the bed, full of thoughts. She got up and went to the window and looked towards Avinash’s room. Then she came back to the bed. She looked at her uncle photo on the wall. “Yes, I can’t say the same thing to my uncle. We are so much grateful for his help.”
She looked at Avinash’s window. The light was on. She went to the balcony and stood looking towards his room. “I wonder when it will be morning.”
